Maintaining healthy lungs is key to ensuring good lung capacity. The lungs are essential for oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange, regulating the oxygen your body needs. When lung capacity improves, your body receives more oxygen, leading to increased energy and less fatigue.

Exercises to Improve Lung Capacity

Lung capacity refers to the amount of air your lungs can hold. Healthy lungs facilitate the expulsion of carbon dioxide and other waste gases from the body.

A larger lung capacity allows you to breathe deeper, helping to clear mucus and other contaminants from the airways. In contrast, reduced lung capacity can lead to lower oxygen levels in the body, which can cause fatigue, shortness of breath, and decreased endurance.

There are several ways to boost lung capacity, such as quitting smoking, exercising, and performing breathing exercises. Various physical activities like swimming, brisk walking, cycling, and aerobics are excellent for improving lung function. In addition, specific breathing exercises can further support lung capacity.

Some beneficial breathing exercises include:

Diaphragmatic Breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as abdominal breathing, involves using the diaphragm muscle, which separates the chest from the abdomen.

How to practice diaphragmatic breathing:

  • Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
  • Relax your shoulders.
  • Place one hand on your abdomen and the other on your chest.
  • Inhale deeply through your nose for about 2 seconds, allowing the air to fill your stomach and making it expand outward. Your stomach should move more than your chest.
  • Exhale slowly for 2 seconds through pursed lips while gently pressing your stomach inward.
  • Repeat several times.

Pursed Lips Breathing

Pursed lips breathing is a simple technique that helps improve airflow and allows more air to enter and leave your lungs, making you more physically active. It’s easy to do: inhale through your nose and exhale twice as long through pursed lips.

Alternate Nostril Breathing

Alternate nostril breathing is a yoga-inspired exercise that can help improve lung function. Here’s how to do it:

  • Sit comfortably and place your left hand on your knee.
  • Raise your right hand to your nose, exhale, and close your right nostril with your thumb.
  • Inhale deeply through your left nostril, then close it with your fingers.
  • Release your thumb from your right nostril and exhale through it.
  • Inhale through your right nostril, then close it.
  • Exhale through your left nostril.
  • Repeat for up to 5 minutes, finishing with an exhale through the left nostril.

Tips for Maintaining Lung Health

Several factors can contribute to reduced lung capacity, such as smoking, pregnancy, obesity, lack of physical activity, and respiratory conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In many cases, lung capacity can be preserved or improved with proper medical care and lifestyle adjustments.

Here are some ways to keep your lungs healthy:

  • Quit smoking
  • Protecting yourself from pollutants by wearing a mask or stay indoors when air quality is poor
  • Ensure proper airflow in your home
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Get vaccinated with vaccines like the COVID-19 and pneumonia shots

Breathing exercises can be an effective tool to improve lung capacity. If you have concerns about your lung health, consider consulting a doctor or using the health consultation feature in the Ai Care app, available for download on both the App Store and Play Store.
